Gravebound: Borderlands Meets Risk of Rain 2. My first impressions

2026-10-09

Imagine Borderlands and Risk of Rain 2 having a baby, and its favorite toy is a gun designed to absolutely destroy rebellious household appliances.

Meet Gravebound! :D

This is another game I'm reviewing that doesn't even try to reinvent the wheel. It takes familiar roguelite mechanics, adds its own setting, a healthy dose of ridiculous humor, and BAM! We've got another game capable of stealing entire evenings.

If you've played Risk of Rain 2, Megabonk, or Vampire Survivors, you'll immediately recognize the basic gameplay loop. Fight enemies, collect upgrades, develop your character, and try to survive increasingly ridiculous amounts of chaos. Gravebound also adds looting and extraction mechanics, giving every run an extra layer of risk.

And damn, it feels good!

I especially appreciate the autorun feature. It’s an absolute blessing! Combine that with a weapon that doesn’t require perfectly precise aiming, and you’ve got a recipe for comfortable one-handed gaming. Your other hand is free to hold a cup of tea. :D

But my favorite part has to be the enemies.

Fridge robot.
Fan robot.
CRT monitor robot.

And an entire army of other mechanical weirdos that apparently decided humanity had treated them like household appliances for long enough.

The further I progress through a run, the more I find myself looking around to discover what other ridiculous robot hybrids the developers have created.
Of course, not everything works perfectly. I encountered a bug where a HUD notification about an item I'd picked up got stuck on my screen until I collected something else.

Nothing major, but still.
Looking through other players' reviews, it's also clear that Gravebound could use some additional polish. People mention technical issues, problems with private lobbies, and frustrations with the loot system. Some also feel there isn't quite enough content yet.

On the positive side, players praise the addictive gameplay loop, creative enemy designs, and the sheer fun of destroying robots together.

And I'm definitely in that second group.

In fact, I have to admit I'm currently enjoying Gravebound more than the three games I mentioned earlier!

Would I recommend it? Absolutely!

Especially if you've got a few friends who enjoy this kind of game. Gravebound supports co-op for up to six players, so turning clankers into scrap metal together sounds like an even better time.

Just remember that it's still in Early Access.

And finally, I have one question for the developers.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
WHY DID YOU ADD ITALIAN BRAINROT SKINS?!

TUNG TUNG SAHUR?!
ASSASSINO CAPPUCCINO?!

PLEASE. 😭😭😭

I have absolutely no idea who came up with this idea.
But I'm afraid they know their target audience a little too well.
